Head to head: FEU vs UE

When it comes to universities, people often talk about the Big Four (UP, ADMU, DLSU and UST). Universities like Far Eastern University and the University of the East seldom get as much attention. I wonder: Which is the better university?

The writer of this blog set out to answer this question. First, he looked at the passing rates of the two institutions in nursing, accounting, civil engineering and secondary education. This was what he found*:

UE had higher passing percentages in nursing and civil engineering while FEU was better at passing its graduates in accounting and secondary education. So far, the two are tied.

The writer also examined each university's designated CHED Centers of Excellence and Development. For comparison, designations in the same program were ignored. Only unique COEs and CODs were considered. In this regard, UE wins. Both have CODs in Information Technology, but only the UE Nursing program is a COE.

Based on these two criteria, UE is slightly better than FEU.

Three saints rule in Northern Luzon: The best universities in Regions I, II and the CAR

Louis, Mary and Paul -- no it’s not a band. These are Northern Luzon’s top 3 universities. St. Louis University (Baguio), St. Mary’s University (Bayombong, Nueva Vizcaya), and St. Paul University (Tuguegarao, Cagayan) live up to their Catholic tradition of education excellence. The author compiled government data to evaluate universities in Region I, II and the Cordillera Administrative Region.
Like the review of universities in the Visayas, the number of Centers of Excellence (COE) of each university was tallied. Each university was given 2 points for every COE and 1 point for every Center of Development (COD) designation. The passing rates of the universities in the two most recent licensure exams in nursing, accountancy, secondary education, criminology and civil engineering were also examined. The first-ranked university got 4 points. The second in ranking received 3 points while the third- and fourth-ranked schools earned 2 and 1 points respectively. Here are the 5 best colleges in Northern Luzon.
# 1 SAINT LOUIS UNIVERSITY -- Baguio (18 points). Founded by Rev. Fr. Séraphin Devesse, CICM in 1911, Saint Louis is the largest university north of Manila. It prides itself in being a Center of Excellence in teacher education and being a COD in nursing, civil engineering and 6 other fields, the most number of designations for any university in Northern Luzon. It has an astounding 98.6% passing rate (1st in N. Luzon) in the nursing board exams and a respectable 70.95% passing rate (2nd) in secondary education licensure exams.
#2 SAINT MARY’S UNIVERSITY -- Bayombong, Nueva Vizcaya (13 points). Also established by the Congregatio Immaculati Cordis Mariae missionaries, it holds the best passing rate in criminology (96%) this part of Luzon. It has also been designated by the CHED as a COE in teacher education and as a COD in information technology and civil engineering.
# 3 SAINT PAUL UNIVERSITY -- Tuguegarao, Cagayan (12 points). True to quality Paulinian education, St. Paul is the only nursing COE in Northern Luzon. It is no surprise then that it has a passing rate of 97.96% (2nd) in the nursing board exams. It has also been designated as a COD in teacher education, business and information technology.
# 3 MARIANO MARCOS STATE UNIVERSITY -- Batac, Ilocos Norte (12 points). Tied with St. Paul is the only public university in the top 5. Mariano Marcos State University holds the best passing rate in Northern Luzon for the civil engineering licensure exams at 77.27%. Its biology, agriculture and ceramic engineering programs are recognized as CODs.
# 4 UNIVERSITY OF THE CORDILLERAS -- Baguio (9 points). Rounding up the top 5 is the only private nonsectarian university in the top 5. The University of the Cordilleras is a COE in information technology, teacher education and criminology where 95.83 % of its graduates pass the licensure exam (2nd).
